Utah National Parks 2008

The Cycling Escapes Color Country to Canyonlands cycling trip in mid October was a stunningly beautiful organized ride with only 11 participants through several of southern Utah's National Parks including Zion National ParkBryce Canyon National ParkEscalante National MonumentCapitol Reef National Park, down to Lake Powell and then back up the Burr Trail to Boulder, Utah. Each day had some wonderful scenery and views. It was a challenging ride covering 478 miles and 32,500 feet of climbing over 6 days, with much of the climbing on grades of  7-10% with 12-14% pitches vs the 5-7% common in Colorado.

We were fortunate to have very good weather for the entire trip other than some significant headwinds part of a couple days. I do think, though, that southern Utah has the market cornered on chip-seal road material! The ride was well organized and operated by Richard Merrick's Cycling Escapes of Agoura Hills, CA. I would recommend them without hesitation; nevertheless, while a wonderful ride, this particular trip is very challenging and probably not for the casual rider unless they are willing to spend time in the SAG van on the longer days and more difficult climbs. Daily routes and elevation profiles are shown below. Google Earth .kml files for each day can be downloaded here.
